We’re looking for a Grassroots Organizing Fellow!

Riders Alliance is proud to have been selected by the Johnson Family Foundation as an inaugural host organization for the Johnson Justice Fellowship alongside the Center for Popular Democracy and New American Leaders. This two-year fellowship, based in New York City, focuses on preparing emerging leaders from diverse communities for careers in public service.

Johnson Justice Fellows will be selected to work in either grassroots organizing (at Riders Alliance), policy change and advocacy (at Center for Popular Democracy), or electoral engagement (at New American Leaders). In addition to their work with the host organizations, fellows will be matched with a mentor, participate in an ongoing speaker series, and have access to a network of other leaders within the democracy building, public service, and social justice spaces.

Are you a talented organizer looking to gain more hands on experience in base building, leadership development, and campaign organizing? Consider applying for the grassroots organizing fellowship track with Riders Alliance!

The grassroots organizing fellow will join our team to help expand our base building and member leadership development. The fellow will work directly in communities most reliant on public transit to engage transit riders in our campaigns for more affordable, reliable, and accessible buses and subways. Working closely with our organizing team, the fellow will be responsible for supporting the growth of our leader recruitment and engagement program, including organizing trainings, community meetings, and designing new creative ways to engage riders in the fight for better public transit.

The strongest applicants will have:

  • Minimum of 3 years in grassroots organizing where you have demonstrated success in developing leadership, and recruiting/retaining members.

  • Excellent people skills: ability to quickly build relationships, to listen to and persuade people, and to engage people effectively around a common goal.

  • A record of organizing in diverse settings, including low-income communities and communities of color.

  • Familiarity with communities in Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx and/or lived experience as a Brooklyn, Queens or Bronx transit rider.

This is a two-year fellowship with a salary range of $70-80k and a full benefits package that will begin September 2023 and run through August 2025. Applications are due by March 31, 2023. Please visit Johnson Justice Fellowship Program page to learn more and apply today!
